In the Orange County by Date section, the area depicted in the following group of photographs is Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. The park, in south Orange County between Santiago Canyon Road and Portola Parkway, and bordering on communities such as Lake Forest and Foothill Ranch, was ravaged by the Santiago Fire of 2007. The arson-generated fire which swept through the area burned more than 30,000 acres. Earlier this year while looking through concert information, I came across a brochure posted to the O.C. Parks website. The brochure, which can be found at www.ocparks.com/uploadgraphics/Santiago_Fire_Flyer_SinglePage(1).pdf or www.ocparks.com/hbphappenings, contained a short description of the recovery process taking place in the burn areas. Having seen some of the scenery from Santiago Canyon Road, and thinking of the connection between parks and summer, I thought it might be interesting to see more of how nature begins to heal after a transformation such as one brought about by a devastating wildfire. Thanks to the assistance of the OC Parks office and rangers Vicky Malton and Raul Murillo, I was able to take the following group of photographs. They are a small window on the changes which have taken place in the area since November 2007. (Except where otherwise noted, all photographs are © 2008 Dorothy A. Birsic.) By some estimates it will take 10 - 25 years for the park to reach its pre-fire state. However, even now the scenery has begun to return to
a more normal state. Blackened branches and dead plant life remain, but a gradually greening live landscape is returning, along with area wildlife. There is a chance that the park will
re-open to the soon. In the interim, please respect the wilderness and stay out of the burned areas. For further information and the most recent park updates,
