CONCERTS BY DATE - INLAND EMPIRE This page lists concerts by date for cities in the Inland Empire. You may view the schedules by scrolling down the page or by clicking a date below. Please remember: although every attempt is made to bring you the most up-to-date concert information possible, all schedules are subject to change. It is recommended that you confirm any performance you wish to attend. In the Inland Empire by Date Section, the subject is the "History Intersecting at the Intersection of Mission Inn Avenue and Orange Street." In the heart of Riverside, on the grounds of the public library, this Chinese pavilion stands as a recognition of "the Chinese people's contributions to the growth" of the city. Across Orange Street from the pavilion, and in the background of the picture, stands the Mission Inn, a building which the National Register of Historic Places names as the largest Mission Revival building in California. On the other side of the pavilion, across Mission Inn Avenue, is the Riverside Metropolitan Museum. The history of the Chinese in Riverside, the history and growth of the Mission Inn, and a portion of the citrus industry of the early 1900s that transformed much of the region all intersect here. (Many thanks to Kevin Hallaran, Museum Archivist of the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, for his assistance in locating historical photographs, and to Steve Spiller, Museum and Collections Manager, Mission Inn Museum. Sources of information include Riverside's History From its First People to the Present, Riverside Museum Press, 1998; Kevin Hallaran; and Self-Guided Tour information from California Citrus State Historical Park.) In the late 1800s, the Chinese in the Riverside area worked in homes and in the agricultural industry, and many worked at "picking and packing citrus crops. The Chinese workers helped growers in planting, grafting, pruning, irrigating and other ways." A Chinatown was established in the late 1880s about a mile or two away from what is now the Orange Street/Mission Inn Avenue intersection. The picture on the left is of Mongol Avenue of the Riverside Chinatown circa 1900. Fire destroyed most of the original buildings of Chinatown in the mid 1890s, but the two buildings on the left and right in the foreground of the picture were rebuilt more substantially with brick. Spanish missionaries introduced citrus to California in the late 1700s. But in 1873, a missionary in Bahia, Brazil, came across a sweet and nearly seedless orange. He sent samples to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and an employee in the Department of Agriculture sent two small trees to Luther and Eliza Tibbets, friends living in Riverside. Thousands of acres of navel orange trees were propagated from the bud wood of those two trees. The colorized picture above shows President Theodore Roosevelt transplanting one of those two trees to the grounds of the Mission Inn in May 1903. In 1985, excavations of the Chinatown site were undertaken by the Great Basin Foundation and yielded approximately three tons of artifacts, some of which are now housed at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum (excavation photo at left courtesy of the Riverside Metropolitan Museum).
