In keeping with the theme, "METAMORPHOSES," photographs and art this year will reflect various aspects of change, especially the type of change which is in some way transformative for the people, places or subjects it affects. In the Los Angeles County By Date Section, the pictures all depict various aspects of the Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro/Wilmington). Every year in May during World Trade Week there are free boat tours of the port. I took many of these photos during this year's tours, which started from both Ports O' Call Village in San Pedro and the Banning's Landing Community Center in Wilmington. Last year the port celebrated its 100th birthday, and the changes which have taken place in the area in those 100 years are truly astounding. The photo above shows the port lumberdocks in the late 1800s. According to port statistics, in 1907 the port handled $2 million worth of cargo and the top trading partner was the Pacific Northwest region of the United States . . . Rows of freight containers stretch endlessly across docks and aboard ships in the port. These containers aboard a ship dwarf in size the man on deck in the bottom left of the picture. A news release celebrating the port's 100th birthday explains the significance of containers. "Up until the mid-20th century, the Port received cargo in crates, pallets, and small lots of varying sizes and shapes. Because of the lack of uniformity and security, unloading cargo was painstakingly slow and the frequency of damage, pilferage and loss of cargo was high. Providing a better solution, the containerized cargo revolution came to the Port in the late 1950s. Containers can be easily loaded, sealed and shipped on vessels, railroad cars, and trucks. Almost every manufactured product or its components are shipped in a container. Containerization is an important element of the innovations in logistics and security that propelled the Port of Los Angeles to critical national importance."
