AN INTRODUCTION TO THE IMAGES ON THE THREE MAIN CONCERT PAGES. This year's theme, explained more on the "News" and "About the Site" pages, focuses on images produced by AI-powered text-to-image generators. For those who are not familiar with the programs, they are online-based AI systems which generate an image from text input into the system. There are several systems, among them DALL-E, Midjourney and the one from which most of this site's images were generated, the ImagineArt art generator, found at www.imagine.art. The two images above, which took just seconds to be generated, were (on the left) from the text "a perfect woman," and (on the right) from the text "a perfect white woman with light brown hair and green eyes wearing a bright pink sweater, white pants and black shoes, sitting on a wooden park bench under a blooming cherry tree." While the fact that these AI images generators exist is remarkable, and the results can be spectacular, they are not without their inconsistencies. Look, for example at the top slat on the bench on the picture on the right. It does not align properly in the area behind the woman's back.

What is being included on the COUNTY "Concerts by City," COUNTY "Concerts By Date" and "Concert by Type of Music" pages is a narrative with and about the images produced over several weeks in May and June of this year from the ImagineArt text-to-image generator. The generator used was the first-generation one; their second generation (V2) generator is now available and sits in the primary position on the log-in page. What was the purpose? When I started, the purpose was simply to find the system's reaction to the word "perfect" attached as a modifier to as simple an additional word as possible. In some cases a few extra words were added where necessary (which will be explained more in the text below and on the other pages). For consistency, only one text-to-image generator was used to try to understand how that particular AI system "thinks," particularly for a word expressing a concept which even most humans might not agree upon. The images perhaps might generate a bit of discussion and debate. To follow the entire narrative, begin on the county "Concerts By City" pages, which includes images primarily of people, then go to the county "Concerts By Date" pages, which include images of a variety of other things. For a bit of fun, the "Concerts By Type of Music" page concludes with images the system displayed for bands, ie a perfect rock band, a perfect country music band, a perfect mariachi band, etc.

A couple of other notes. First, the image here on the left appeared a few times in place of an image which should have been generated. Also, due to the number of families visiting this site, any images in which some type of nudity made it through the computer's "censor" have not been included. There were a number of times I found myself wondering "What makes that perfect?" about the images produced, or just "Huh?" It seems that to this AI system "perfection" in people involves youth, little clothing, great pecs in men and a significant bustline in women, while perfection in other things involves a good deal of symmetry. But for all of these images, remember one thing - they were produced by a computer AI system, and though we may judge them with all our human thoughts, feelings and opinions, that is not something (that as of yet) a computer is able to do.

The text and image narrative continues here from the "Orange County By City" concert page. With all of the people above being hypothetical people as determined by the AI system, I thought perhaps I might try to ask the system for the image of an actual person - Shakespeare. These are AI images generated from the text "A Perfect Shakespeare," ... including the one below.

AI image generated from the text "A Perfect Shakespeare," again with the two-head problem. Surely a system that could recognize who Shakespeare was would know that he only had one head. It made me wonder, however, if perhaps the system had been trained in some way on idioms. If the system knew the phrase "two heads are better than one," would it know the actual meaning of the phrase beyond just the words? Or would it interpret the phrase by "thinking" that if one head is good, two heads quite literally would make a more "perfect" person?

AI images generated from the text "Scarlet Johansson" and "A Perfect Scarlett Johansson" (no difference in the images between the two). With all apologies to Scarlett Johansson, the system was asked to generate her image since she has been in the news so much regarding AI and her voice. Without ever having seen or met her, one can only surmise that the images are a fair representation of what she actually looks like. However, that is a problem not only for her, but for anyone in the public eye. If an AI system can generate a life-like image of anyone, and that image can be manipulated in limitless ways by AI with only a few extra words, then how can anyone protect their rights? Though AI images are not eligible for copyright, the ImagineArt system tells me that with a paid subscription I have the right to commercial use of the images I produce. Perhaps the fine print in their agreements states that images of actual people can not be used commercially, but what if it doesn't? Hopefully some of these issues, as well as the blurring of lines between true photographs and images altered by AI, will be able to be discussed in this site's Essay section a little later this summer.
