WELCOME TO THE SITE'S FIRST SUMMER GUEST ARTIST, PAINTER BIANCA TURNER. Over the years the site has welcomed artists whose works in some way express or interpret the summer theme. This summer the site theme deals with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and creating and expressing concepts through images generated by AI. Bianca Turner is an artist who has considered the impact of AI on her work, and this page includes images from her series of paintings titled "Deeper Than AI." You can read more about the series below and about her on the site's Guests page. Her works currently are on display at the Art Depot Gallery in Fontana. All images are © by Bianca Turner and may not be reproduced without express permission from the artist.

"Intertwined" (Acrylic, Gouache and Oil on Paper)

"DEEPER THAN AI." Statement by Bianca Turner, PhD. I am not scared by AI. I am intrigued by it. Since the 1970s, we have tried to create and develop AI in order to be of help to us. Yes - this is the role of AI; to assist us and not to take our place. Currently, AI is at such a level that it can resolve a large array of issues. It has learned numerous algorithms and is capable of shuffling through them and obtaining new "formulas." If we know what to ask AI, if we use the correct questions, we can obtain compelling answers. It doesn't matter HOW we ask. Emotions are not part of the AI's algorithm when the answer is given to us. We might get the perfect answer in a DEFINITION format, but maybe we are not looking for that type of perfection. Maybe we are looking to find the personality of who is answering us. We won't get that from AI.

Because AI copies, mimics and does permutations with all the learned algorithms, it is capable of producing and mostly RE-producing art. This is not exactly something negative for artists. In fact, it could inspire us to become more original and open to new, unexplored areas of creativity. In contrast, the HUMAN brain is spontaneous and it is able to improvise when it is needed. AI cannot do that. An artist can fix mistakes, can transform a piece of art into something absolutely different, can come up with new views, ideas, concepts . . . and that's possible because a lot of emotions are involved with the process of creation. We have the ability to react in the moment - AI can't reproduce this ability.

Artist Process: During the creation process for these works, Bianca experimented with creating her own art and then investigating what AI would return as a reference image. The process also was reversed. In other instances she found there was no viable search answer as the artificial intelligence failed to understand abstract searches and subject matter involving emotions. Many interesting findings were discovered.

"Arid Loneliness." I met the photographer Andrea Marongiu on Instagram, following his aerial pictures taken with a drone. I was attracted in particular to one reel taken in Sardinia, Italy, in the Peninsula del Sinis. There, during the rainy season, the area is covered with wetlands. In the summer, being an island in the Mediterranean Sea, the water evaporates and the terrain is seen in a very intricate pattern. I fell in love with the imagery he documented and I felt the urge to recreate it through my painting. I was alone for a while when I painted this scene. It was in the middle of August and I was painting outside, in the heat, transforming myself into that person that Andrea shows in his video. I realized that we, as biological creatures, can be very resilient and adapt to anything.

"Pennies From Heaven." Chat GPT created this definition of "Pennies from Heaven:" The phrase "Pennies from Heaven" has two possible meanings. One is an idiom that means unexpected good luck or good fortune, often financial in nature. The other is a spiritual sign that means angels are trying to communicate with you by sending you coins. Chat GPT was able to explain the meaning, but it was not capable of creating an abstract painting based on the information. When I asked AI to paint/draw pennies from heaven, the painting was a realistic one depicting a bunch of pennies or a variation where a sensual woman (probably depicting heaven) was surrounded by pennies.

"Prosopagnosia Test" (Acrylic and Talc on Paper). The face is a complex structure. It has a complicated three-dimensional shape, a substantial degree of mobility, and structural constraints that make all faces fairly simliar; all of these issues present challenges to a perceptual system. Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is a cognitive disorder of face perception in which the ability to recognize familiar faces is impaired. For facial recognition software, the detection phase of facial recognition starts with an algorithm that learns what a face is. Usually the creator of the algorithm does this by "training" it with photos of faces. Add another algorithm for analysis, and yet another for recognition, and you've got a facial recognition system. In the piece pictured here and the one below, Bianca has played with the typical details of facial recognition including emotional expression.

"ManWithSocks." A friend said, "Ladies, stop spending so much time looking in the mirror. Men don't care anyway. They would have sex with a sock." For some reason, the idea of performing intercourse with a sock or pair of socks made me check what AI might understand of this joke. So I started playing with words, asking the AI to paint me a picture of a man having sex with a sock. Interestingly enough, the word "sex" was not allowed to be used. It intrigued me. I started to ask the AI the same question using slang words, metaphors, expressions - all connected to the original idea. No matter how hard I tried, the best the AI could do was either give me a picture of a pile of socks or restrain me from using "dirty words." In this painting I tried to depict something that was understood literally by the AI and the way I was imagining the AI's algorithm working with regard to my question.
