The photos on this page are courtesy of the New York Public Library archives digital gallery. The photo in the heading, "Night," by Paul Manship,
is explained at greater length on the Concerts By City, Orange County page. The photo above which is part of the calendar represents Freedom of the Press (gallery permalink:
http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/id?1654207). The description of the statue, taken in the context of the period of the fair (which in 1939-40 was prior to
the start of World War II), is as follows: "This heroic statue, representative of Freedom of the Press, is one of a group of four sculptures symbolizing the Four Freedoms -- Press, Worship, Assembly and Speech -- guaranteed by the Bill of
Rights . . . Because these basic rights of human liberty exist in the United States, Young America - at the left looking up at the giant figure in the picture above - can be thankful that he is attending a World's Fair instead of
a World War. The Freedoms' group was . . . [created] by Leo Friedlander and stands at the intersection of Rainbow Avenue and Constitution Mall at the big exposition on Flushing Meadow."
