The photos on this page are courtesy of the New York Public Library archives digital gallery. The photo in the heading, "Morning," by Paul Manship, is explained at greater length on the Concerts By City, Inland Empire page. The photo above which is part of the calendar represents Freedom of Worship (gallery permalink: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/id?1654209). The description of the statue, taken in the context of the period of the fair (which in 1939-40 was prior to the start of World War II), is as follows: "This heroic statue, representative of the Freedom of Worship, is one of a group of four 30-foot sculptures symbolizing the four basic rights of human liberty - freedom of Worship, Press, Assembly and Speech -- guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, which stands at the intersection of Rainbow Avenue and Constitution Mall . . . Because these elemental human rights have not been violated or abridged in this country, America can be thankful that its citizens are peaceably engaged in a World's Fair instead of a World War. The Freedoms group was . . . [created] by Leo Friedlander. In the left background may be seen some of the fountains on the Lagoon of Nations and beyond, the U.S. Government building."
