ABOUT THE PHOTOS ON THIS PAGE: The main photos on the site and on this page come from the Fairplex Garden Railroad in Pomona (www.fgrr.org). It's not often than one stumbles upon a miniature world that both surprises and delights, but that's just what happened for me this year at the LA County Fair. Though I'd been at the fair many times, I'd never had a chance to go inside the small area called the Fairplex Garden Railroad. According to the FGRR website, the area is just about to celebrate its 100th birthday. The model railroad "world" was first established in 1924 and moved to its current Fairplex location in 1935. Currently the system has over 10,000 feet of track and over thirty sections with a variety of equipment and trains operating at any time. The various trains and trolleys pass several miniature scenes depicting California history and locales from the 1850s to today. The trains also wander through mountains, over lakes and streams and through the gardens. Volunteers maintain the Garden Railroad throughout the year and operate the trains for several shows in addition to the open hours during the fair. The photos on the concert pages show just a few of the scenes from different areas, with most of the human figures in the scenes not more than a few inches high.
