The "Links" page has grown tremendously with the number of venues added to the listings and the number of artists appearing at the concerts. Several years ago it was the most slowly-loading page on the site. As a result, it was split into three sections. The first section contains links to the cities/venues hosting the concerts, as well as a small list of art and poetry links. The second section is a list of band links for the letters "A" through "L," and the third section is a list of band links for the letters "M" through "Z." Some cities/venues do not release their concert information until well into June or later (especially for series in August and September), so the Links section is continually updated during the summer as information is received. Click on a link below to go to one of the three sections. • CITY AND ART/POETRY LINKS • • BAND LINKS A - L • • BAND LINKS M - Z •
The 1958 Expo in Brussels was the first major World's Fair after the end of World War II (only a smaller one was held in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in 1949). The pictures above, courtesy of the Atomium (www.atomium.be), show the building under construction (left) and at the 1958 event (right). The Atomium guidebook notes that a World Expo is a "great global gathering . . . where countries build Pavilions to present their culture and expertise. Each Pavilion is, in a way, a showcase for the country. Each Universal Exhibition has a theme and a symbolic building. In 1958, science was given pride of place: at that time, everyone was convinced that thanks to scientific progress we would soon travel in capsules rather than cars, everyone would have robots to do the housework, no one would ever be ill, and living in space would be possible. In 1958, unlike today, the whole world was convinced that science would solve all our problems and improve our lives. The challenge for Expo 58 was to find a means of celebrating the atom and its applications by inventing an exceptional Pavilion. This was when engineer-architect Andre Waterkeyn observed that, in nature, atoms of iron organise themselves in a regular cubic structure which could easily be reproduced in the form of a building. He then made an elementary unit of iron (9 atoms), magnified 165 billion times, to give the Atomium its shape of a cube standing on one corner, with nine atoms (one at each corner) connected together by 20 tubes, the whole structure standing on 3 giant pillars. Thus the Atomium was born with its unique shape. Although the Atomium was not intended to outlive the Universal Exhibition of 1958, its popularity and success quickly made it a major feature of the landscape." A video of the interior of the Atomium is accessible on the building's site, and click or scroll down to the art/poetry section to view a snippet of footage from the 1958 event. LINKS PART I - CITY LINKS AND ART/POETRY The links below are for summer concert venues. Unless otherwise noted, the contacts/venues listed are for the cities sponsoring the concerts. Links for other special concerts and events are included in the main listings. By clicking on the web address you will reach the main site for the city or organization sponsoring the concert. The address for the performance venue is also included. Click on a section of the alphabet below, or scroll down until you find the city name you are looking for.
