Saturdays and Sundays, September 3 - 25 - Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza. - The 10th Annual Festival of Children is a month-long celebration of the wonders of childhood with celebrity appearances, music and dance performances, activities and workshops. Most events are Saturdays and Sundays between noon and 5 p.m. in the Carousel and Jewel Courts of South Coast Plaza, Bristol St./405 Freeway. October 2 - OC Children's Book Festival. The Orange County Children's Book Festival will take place on October 2 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Orange Coast College, 2701 Fairview (at Arlington). There will be presentations from children's authors and illustrators, animal exhibits, a variety of entertainment, hands-on activities and food and beverage vendors. October 2 - Segerstrom Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary Performances. Cameron Carpenter Organ Recital. Sometimes called the "bad boy" of the organ world, Carpenter is considered a revolutionary in his field. He is a popular concert hall artist, performs with pop singers, and is a frequent guest soloist with international symphony orchestras. His performance will take place at 1 p.m. in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The performance is free but tickets are required and can be reserved via the SCFTA website. October 2 - Segerstrom Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary Performances. Ozomatli. The multi Grammy Award-winning band will present a free concert at 5 p.m. on the Arts Plaza at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Plaza will open at 10 a.m.; no reserving of space will be allowed before that time. Capacity is limited in the Plaza, and once capacity has been reached, no one else will be allowed in. No animals, coolers, BBQs, alcohol or glass containers allowed. It is recommended that you call/check the site for any information updates prior to the end of the week (9/30). September 10 and 11 - Toshiba Tall Ships Festival - The Tall Ships Festival is the largest gathering of tall ships on the West Coast. The festival will feature an array of both paid and free family activities including live chantey music, an art show, living history demonstrations, and food vendors. Grass Park activities (the Chantey concerts, arts and crafts show, interactive encampments and vendor area) are free. Fees for entry to Ocean Education Center, Tallship tours and cruises. September 10 - Huntington Beach Council on Aging Senior Saturday Festival. The annual event features live music and about 70 sponsor booths with information, products and services geared toward seniors. The event will take place from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Pier Plaza at the Huntington Beach pier, Main Street/Pacific Coast Highway. Hosted by the Huntington Beach Council on Aging. September 11 - 9/11 Remembrance Events at Concordia University. Concordia University in Irvine will commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with an afternoon speakers and a remembrance ceremony and concert featuring the Concordia Wind Orchestra, conducted by Jeff Held. The afternoon convocation will begin at 12:30 p.m., and the remembrance ceremony/concert will take place from 4 - 5 p.m. A reception will follow the ceremony. All events will take place at the CU Center for Worship and Performing Arts on campus. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the box office or clicking the online link on the CUI site. September 24 - Irvine Valley College Performances. 3rd Annual IVC Music Alumni Recital. The program will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage at the IVC Performing Arts Center and will feature performances by a number of school alumni. October 1 - Irvine Global Village Festival. There will be live entertainment throughout the day on five stages, a kids village, international food vendors, an international marketplace, cultural exhibits and other exhibits and more. Orange County Great Park Flights and Sounds Summer Festival - The Great Park in Irvine will feature live concerts on Saturday evenings and dance parties on Friday nights. Friday nights are World Beat Dance Parties and Saturday concerts will feature a variety of American music styles. All performances begin at 8:15 p.m. The Hangar Cafe will open each evening at 6 p.m., and there are free balloon rides at the Great Park on Friday and Saturday nights (balloon is tethered to the ground and flights are subject to wind and weather conditions). September 11 - 10 Year Anniversary September 11th Remembrance Event. The City of Laguna Niguel will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Event to pay tribute to those who lost their lives, were injured, or suffered loss of family or friends in the tragedy. The event will also honor local firefighters, law enforcement and members of the Armed Forces who make daily sacrifices to keep the community safe. September 11 - San Juan Capistrano 9-11 Memorial Ceremony. The City of San Juan Capistrano will pay tribute to the victims and heroes of the 9/11 tragedy in this morning memorial ceremony. The event will take place at 8 a.m. in historic Town Center Park, 31852 El Camino Real. The memorial will include an Orange County Sheriff's Deparment Color Guard and bugler, comments by Orange County dignitaries, and a performance of "God Bless America" by Capistrano Valley Christian School students. September 3 - LuchaPalooza. LuchaPalooza will take place from 6 - 10 p.m. at the corner of 4th Street and Birch (next to Calacas, 324 W. 4th Street). September 4 - Latin American Family Festival and Target Sundays at the Bowers Museum. The Bowers Museum will present a Latin American Family Festival and Target Sunday program at the museum. There will be live music and dance performances from Latin America, arts and crafts and other activities from noon - 3:30 p.m., and museum admission is also free for Target Free Admission Sunday (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.). September 17 and 18 - Fiestas Patrias Santa Ana 2011. The 2011 Fiestas Patrias celebration will take place from noon - 10 p.m. on Fourth Street ("Calle Cuatro") in Downtown Santa Ana between Broadway and Minter. There will be carnival rides, games and food vendors (fee), and two stages of live entertainment. The Fiestas Patrias Parade will take place on Sunday from 4 - 6 p.m. The parade will begin at 15th and Main, continue south on Main to Civic Center Drive, and proceed west on Civic Center to Flower. September 11 - 9/11 10th Anniversary Observance at the Nixon Library. A special remebrance on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks will be held in the White House East Room of the Nixon Library beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will be remarks by local dignitaries, Joe Torrillo, a FDNY Lieutenant who survived the collapse of both towers, and patriotic choral performances. September 17 and 18 - Dozynki Polish Harvest Festival. The 33rd annual Dozynki Harvest Festival will take place from noon - 11 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Pope John Paul II Polish Center, 3999 Rose Drive (one block south of Imperial Highway). There will be authentic Polish foods and beer, Polish music and folk dancers in traditional costumes, and more. The event is a celebration of bountiful harvest that dates back to 16th Century Poland and is celebrated in Polish communities throughout the world. September 30, October 1 and 2 - Oktoberfest at St. Martin de Porres Church. Festival will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at St. Martin de Porres Church, 19767 Yorba Linda Boulevard. Hours are Friday 5 - 11 p.m., Saturday 2 - 11 p.m. and Sunday 1 - 8 p.m. There will be carnival rides, games and food vendors (fee) and entertainment. Friday evening entertainment is Neon Nation (80s); Saturday night entertainment is the Silverados (Country); and Sunday is the band "Hypnotics." Information: (714) 970-2771 or www.smdpyl.org.
