Weekends, September 2 - 30 - Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza. - The 5th Annual Festival of Children is a month-long celebration of the wonders of childhood with celebrity appearances, music and dance performances, activities and workshops. Most events are Saturdays and Sundays between 11:30 a.m. - noon and 4 - 5 p.m. in the Carousel and Jewel Courts of South Coast Plaza, Bristol St./405 Freeway. September 24 - Community Arts Festival at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The Orange County Performing Arts Center welcomes the public to an open house and arts festival from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. There will be music, theater and dance performances, hands-on arts and children's activities, tours of the new Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, workshops and more. September 9 and 10 - Toshiba Tallships Festival - The Ocean Institute celebrates its 22nd year hosting the largest gathering of tallships on the West Coast. The festival will feature an array of family activities including live music, art shows, living history demonstrations, and food vendors. Also maritime displays and presentations, Polynesian dancers, interactive pirate encampment and cannon battles. Grass Park activities, Chantey concerts, arts and crafts show, pirate and living history encampments and vendor area are free. Fees for entry to Ocean Education Center, Tallship tours and cruises. September 15 - 23rd Annual Concert Under the Stars. Cal State Fullerton's musical theater students will perform "With a Song in My Heart: The Music of Richard Rogers." There will be selections from The Sound of Music, Carousel, Oklahoma and more, and the evening will conclude with fireworks. Concert is at 7:30 p.m. on the lawn north of the Titan Gymnasium. Evening event is a paid, ticketed/dinner event, but students and the public are welcome to bring lawn chairs to the grassy area and view the performance. September 2 - 4 - Boardfest: All-Girl Action Sports and Empowerment Festival. - Boardfest features a family-oriented beach exposition showcasing free attractions and games, surf clinics, skateboarding demonstrations, live music and stage performances all set against the backdrop of a top-rated professional women's surfing competition. Surf and skate competitions start at 8 a.m., stage activities from about 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. New feature Monday: snowboard rail jam contest with real snow on the beach from 9 - 11 a.m. Events 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the beach at 315 Pacific Coast Highway. September 8 - Bella Terra Grand Opening Party. - The outdoor shopping complex celebrates its grand opening with performances and activities from 3 - 8 p.m. Activities will include DJs, prize giveaways, surf museum display, live animals with Time Warner's Discovery Channel Animal Planet, food vendors and more. September 16 - Irvine Global Village Festival. - Annual festival celebrates the city's cultural diversity. September 11 - September 11th Memorial Event. The City of Laguna Niguel will hold a commemorative event to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 terrorist attacks and to recognize the efforts of the police and fire departments. The 5 Year Anniversary event will take place in the Crown Vally Community Park amphitheater, 29751 Crown Valley Parkway, from 6 - 7 p.m. It will include speakers, music by Brooke Ramel and a candlelight vigil. September 16 and 17 - Fiestas de las Americas (Fiestas Patrias) - This festival celebrates the Independence Days of several Latin and South American countries that coincide with Mexican Independence Day.
