FAIR TRADE

This mahogany coffee
brewed into white ceramic
takes me back to Chiapas jungles,
to your presence in a small exam room
off a luscious courtyard
of birds-of-paradise and bells,
holding a bag of coffee beans,
each green seed of that kilogram
disrobed of its red berry
and separated from its mate
by the repetitive dance
of your graced hands.
It is not the caffeine
but the memory of such a gift
that awakens my heart
this warm afternoon
in my desert home,
far from your rainforest.
