POETRY

Each year that the site has been in existence, five or six of Dorothy's poems have appeared on the summer poetry page. Initially poems were drawn from Dorothy's volume of travel poems and photography entitled "Journeys, Destinations, Routes." More recently, new poems have been written to accompany the summer theme for the site. This summer the poetry section will begin with six poems, one drawn from each year from 2007 - 2012. Each poem appears with the original artwork which accompanied the summer theme (with the exception that links have been redone to include the names of the six poems below). Click on the pictures or indicated links to go to the individual poetry pages.

A/T-G/C: THE ANATOMY OF A POEM

2007: In 2007, the theme was "Pieces: Whole" (The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts). It was the site's 5th anniversary summer. The overall site design revolved around two statues of Michaelangelo's David - one whole and intact, and the other in pieces strewn across the ground. This was one of four new poems written in to accompany the summer theme. Click here to go to this poem.

TAXI AND RICKSHAW

2008: In 2008, the theme was "Metamorphoses." Images of butterflies were prominent throughout the site, and much of the information/images on the site dealt with the subject of change. This poem is one of the original 1998 poems from the "Journeys, Destinations, Routes" book, one of three included on the site that summer. The photograph of the rickshaw and the taxi was taken at a Hong Kong ferry terminal. Click here to go to this poem.

MORTAL/IMMORTAL

2009: The theme for 2009 was "A Storied Summer." Each of the sections of the site was themed to a particular story or group of stories. The poetry section was themed to Greek/Roman mythology, particularly the story of Ulysses and The Odyssey. All of the poems that summer were written in to accompany the summer theme, and each included a snippet from Greek/Roman mythology as well as the poem.Click here to go to this poem.

SOLO, NONET

2010: In 2010, the theme for the summer was "Music, Summer-Style." The site celebrated music and an "octave" of summers (the eighth summer). For those who may be familiar with the melody, the words of this poem are set to the tune of the song "Don't You Want Me" by the Human League. Click here to go to this poem.

PLAYERS

2011: The theme for 2011 was "Game Changer." The poetry section incorporated old-style poetry/word games, such as the one for this poem, a "Cento." Cento is the Latin word for a patchwork cloak, and it was applied to a kind of poetry made up of separate lines taken from different poets. Other names for centos are "mosaics" or "patchwork verses." This was changed somewhat, and all the lines were combined from different works by Shakespeare. Click here to go to this poem.

THE NATURE OF THE BEAST

2012: The summer of 2012 was the site's 10th anniversary summer. The theme was "Animal Magnetism," and this was the final poem of the summer to appear on the site. The word backdrop for the poem is Entry 430 - FREEDOM, noun, from Roget's International Thesaurus, 7th edition. Click here to go to this poem.
